Basic Morning and Evening Chanting
A simple daily chanting sequence for beginners.
-
1
Prepare the space and yourself
Tidy your shrine table or a quiet corner, light incense and candles as an offering, and sit or kneel in a comfortable posture.
-
2
Bow to the Triple Gem three times
Make the five-point prostration three times before you begin chanting.
-
3
Homage (Namo three times)
With palms joined, recite the words of homage to the Triple Gem and "Namo tassa bhagavato…" three times.
-
4
Chant the verses in praise of the Triple Gem
Chant "Itipi so" (the qualities of the Buddha), then the qualities of the Dhamma and of the Saṅgha, in that order.
-
5
Spread loving-kindness and share merit
When you finish chanting, sit quietly for a moment, then recite the words spreading loving-kindness to yourself and all beings. Close by bowing to the Triple Gem three more times.
